Dirt, dust, sand, dead insects, mould spores, cobwebs, and whatever else has blown in over the years. It builds up layer by layer until the window barely slides anymore.

And every time you open that window, some of it ends up inside your house. On the floor. On the furniture. In the air you're breathing.

Screens That Actually Let Air Through

Flyscreens are meant to keep bugs out while letting fresh air in. When they're caked in dust and grime, you're getting neither — just restricted airflow and a view through a grey film.

Our standard approach is to clean screens in place where possible. This keeps the screen supported at all times, maintaining its integrity and preventing older aluminium frames from getting damaged. If the only way to access the glass behind is by removing the screen, we'll remove it — but security screens stay put (our insurance has kittens if we touch them).

We soap them up with specialist soaps, scrub them down with a soft-bristled brush, then rinse with a garden hose. It's the best method because it flushes all the hidden dirt out of every crevice.

When we can't flush with water — access issues, water-sensitive areas, runoff problems — we wet and scrub with soap, then towel dry. It's a B-grade solution, but sometimes it's all we can do.

Your frequently asked track and screen cleaning questions

Do you clean tracks and screens on every job?

For residential window cleans, yes — it's included as standard. For units and apartments, tracks and screens are often not included unless requested. Strata, body corporate requirements and other unit owners may need to be contacted to do it properly. There are extra legal issues to be aware of due to water drainage off balconies that must be mitigated. Fun fact, WHS classes water off a balcony as 'a projectile'. . . you can imagine the potential issues dealing with that.

What if my screens are damaged?

We'll let you know if we spot any tears, holes, or frame damage. We don't repair or replace screens unless we directly caused it by improper handling/accidents (I've put a hole in one or two over the years by putting a finger wrong), but we will not be responsible for age related issues and general wear and tear.

Can you clean security screens?

Yes. Security screens and stainless steel mesh get the same treatment — brushed and rinsed to remove dust and grime. Diamond grill screens can have dirt and grime trapped behind the grills if left for extended periods of time without cleaning. If this is the case, the only way to properly clean them is to remove the netting/gauze and replace with new, should be done every 5 years or so anyway as unless it's a metal-based mesh, they degrade in the Queensland sun.
